Quick answer
Yes. Bingo is legal in Iowa when a qualified organization holds a license from the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing under Iowa Code Chapter 99B, and the Meskwaki Nation runs bingo at its casino in Tama. Iowa's gambling age is 21, but the law exempts Chapter 99B games and sets no bingo age. Real-money online bingo is not legal.

| Tribal casino bingo | Yes |
| Minimum age | Unclear for charity bingo (Chapter 99B sets no bingo age); 21 for most other gambling |

Is bingo legal in Iowa?
Yes. Iowa Code Chapter 99B, the Social and Charitable Gambling law, lets licensed qualified organizations run bingo, raffles and game nights. The Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing issues the licenses, and the state Division of Criminal Investigation can investigate compliance.
Iowa’s rules are hands-on. A bingo occasion may last no more than four consecutive hours, only one licensed organization can run bingo in a given building, and charity gambling can’t take place on a licensed casino gaming floor. Bingo at a fair or community festival of up to six days gets its own looser rules.
Iowa also has tribal bingo. The Meskwaki Nation has run gaming in Tama since the early 1990s, and bingo is still part of the floor at Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel.
How old do you have to be to play bingo in Iowa?
This is genuinely unclear. Iowa Code 725.19 says no one under 21 may place a gambling wager “except as permitted under chapter 99B,” and Chapter 99B sets 21 for social gambling in bars and for veterans’ card tournaments. But it names no age for charity bingo.
In practice, ask the organizer before bringing anyone under 21. Iowa’s commercial casinos are 21+, and the Meskwaki casino sets its own policy.
Can you play online bingo for real money in Iowa?
No. Iowa has allowed online sports betting since 2019, but it hasn’t legalized online casino games or internet bingo, and Chapter 99B licenses only cover in-person games.
Free bingo apps are legal to play. Our online bingo guide explains the options. If gambling is costing you more than you planned, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER.
Are sweepstakes bingo sites legal in Iowa?
Unsettled. Iowa hasn’t passed a ban aimed at dual-currency sweepstakes casinos, but Senate File 2289, signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds on May 15, 2026, gives the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission power to issue cease-and-desist orders and seek court injunctions against anyone offering gambling or “illegal sweepstakes” without a license. That power took effect July 1, 2026.
As of October 2026 we found no public enforcement against the big sweepstakes brands, and many still accept Iowa players. That could change quickly. Our sweepstakes bingo explainer covers what to watch for.

How to run a charity bingo game in Iowa
Iowa offers several license lengths, so pick the one that fits:
- Check eligibility. For a two-year license, your organization must have existed for at least five years, or be a local chapter of a national tax-exempt group that has existed at least two years.
- Choose a license. The two-year qualified organization license costs $150 and allows up to three bingo occasions a week and 15 a month. Shorter licenses, including a 14-day license, are available for occasional events.
- Pick one location. Bingo occasions are limited to the premises named in your approved application.
- Run it by the rules. Keep each occasion to four hours and don’t offer free bingo games.
- Keep separate records and spend proceeds properly on educational, civic, public, charitable, patriotic or religious uses.
If your game charges nothing and gives donated prizes, as at many senior centers, you may not need a license at all under Section 99B.23. Our bingo fundraiser guide covers the rest. Up north, compare Minnesota’s rules.
