U-Pick-Em Bingo: Choose Your Own Numbers

Quick answer

U-Pick-Em bingo is a variation where players choose their own numbers instead of playing a pre-printed card. In a typical hall version, you mark a set count of numbers from 1 to 75 on a special card, and you win by matching a required number of them to the balls drawn, often within a fixed number of calls. Exact rules vary by hall and state.

How does U-Pick-Em bingo work?

U-Pick-Em flips normal bingo around. Instead of buying a card with numbers already printed on it, you choose the numbers you want to play. The caller then draws balls as usual, and you check how many of your picks come up.

The name is spelled several ways, including U-Pick-Em, U-Pic-Em, U-Pik-Em and U-Pick’em. All describe the same idea.

A typical hall version works like this:

  1. Get a U-Pick-Em card. These are special sheets printed with the numbers available to pick, often split across several card faces.
  2. Mark your picks. You circle or daub a set count of numbers. The game’s rules say how many.
  3. Hand in your copy if required. Some games use two-part paper, so the hall keeps a record of your picks before the draw.
  4. Balls are drawn. Many versions draw a fixed set of numbers, commonly 24, often during or alongside a regular bingo game.
  5. Matches win. A card wins when a required count of picks has been called, or the card with the most matches wins.

Rules differ a lot between halls and states, so always read the posted rules for the session.

How do you win U-Pick-Em bingo?

Most U-Pick-Em games are decided by matches, not patterns. A game description might say “match all 9 in 24 calls” or “most matches wins.” Because your numbers can be anywhere from 1 to 75, there’s no row, column or shape to complete.

Some states set rules for how these cards can be used. Michigan’s charitable gaming directive, for example, describes U-Pick-Em style cards that let players select a set quantity of unique numbers between 1 and 75, and treats cards with fewer than 25 spaces differently from standard cards.

What are the odds in U-Pick-Em bingo?

You can work out the odds exactly, because the game is a simple draw. Here’s the chance that every one of your picks is among 24 numbers drawn from 75:

Numbers you pick Chance all are drawn in 24 calls About 1 in…
5 0.246% 406
6 0.067% 1,496
8 0.0044% 22,939
9 0.0010% 96,058
10 0.0002% 422,653

And here’s how many matches you can expect if you pick 9 numbers and 24 balls are drawn:

Matches Chance
0 2.4%
1 12.2%
2 25.4%
3 29.0%
4 19.9%
5 8.5%
6 2.2%
7 or more 0.4%

On average, a 9-number pick matches about 2.9 numbers in 24 calls (9 × 24 ÷ 75). That’s why the top prizes in match-all games are big and rarely won. Explore other bingo math with our bingo odds calculator.

Does choosing your own numbers help?

No. Every ball in the machine has the same chance of being drawn. Picking birthdays, “hot” numbers or numbers that haven’t come up recently doesn’t change your odds. The appeal of U-Pick-Em is that it feels personal, not that it’s easier to win. We look at this and other beliefs in bingo myths.

One practical tip: many players pick birthdays and anniversaries, so numbers 1–31 tend to be popular. If the prize is split between winners, picking less common numbers can mean fewer people to share with. It doesn’t make a win more likely.

U-Pick-Em vs. regular bingo

Feature U-Pick-Em Regular 75-ball
Who picks the numbers You Random, printed on the card
How you win Match a set number of picks Complete a pattern
Free space No Yes
Calls Often a fixed number, such as 24 Until someone wins
Feels like Lottery or keno Classic bingo

U-Pick-Em often runs alongside a regular game, using the same balls. You might play a 75-ball pattern game on your regular pack while a U-Pick-Em card tracks the first 24 numbers, similar to how bonanza bingo adds an extra layer to a session.

Can you play U-Pick-Em at home?

Yes, and it’s an easy addition to a family bingo night. Give each player a slip of paper, have them write down six numbers between 1 and 75, then draw 24 numbers with our bingo caller. Whoever matches the most wins. No special cards needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is U-Pick-Em bingo?

U-Pick-Em is a bingo game where you pick your own numbers rather than getting a random card. Winners are usually decided by how many of your chosen numbers are called, not by a pattern.

How many numbers do you pick in U-Pick-Em bingo?

It depends on the game. Versions described in patents and state rules include players choosing around six to eight numbers, or marking a set quantity from cards covering 1 to 75. The hall's posted rules say how many you pick.

Does picking your own numbers improve your odds?

No. Every number has the same chance of being drawn, so a set of numbers you chose is no more likely to win than a random set. Favorite numbers are fine for fun, but they don't change the math.

Is U-Pick-Em bingo legal?

Where it's offered, it's regulated like other bingo games. States such as Oklahoma and Michigan specifically mention U-Pick-Em style games in their bingo rules. Check your state's charitable gaming rules.
