Quick answer
The umbrella bingo pattern is an open umbrella: a canopy across the top (the middle three squares of row 1 and the whole of row 2), a handle running down the N column through the free space, and a hook at I5. It covers 12 squares and needs 11 numbers. One card has a 7% chance by call 60, and with 500 cards in play the first umbrella usually comes around call 45.
Which squares make the umbrella?
Open the umbrella at the top of the card and let the handle hang down:
- Canopy top: I1, N1, G1
- Canopy edge: B2, I2, N2, G2, O2
- Handle: free space, N4, N5
- Hook: I5
12 squares, 11 numbers. You need every N number on your card (N1, N2, N4 and N5), so the N column is the backbone of this game. The umbrella isn’t symmetrical, because the hook curls to the left.
Umbrella odds by call
Exact single-card figures:
| Calls made | Regular umbrella | Crazy umbrella (any direction) |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 0.05% | 0.19% |
| 50 | 0.76% | 2.9% |
| 60 | 7.0% | 22% |
| 70 | 44% | 82% |
Half of single cards finish a regular umbrella by call 71 and a crazy umbrella by call 66. In a room, our simulation puts the first umbrella at about call 53 with 50 cards and call 45 with 500 cards; for a crazy umbrella it’s about call 48 and call 40.
The cross inside the umbrella
The umbrella contains a complete Latin cross: row 2 plus the N column. It adds three squares to it, I1 and G1 to round off the canopy and I5 for the hook. With 500 cards in play, the first cross usually comes around call 37 and the first umbrella around call 45.
Tips for players
- Watch the N column. Four of your 11 numbers are N numbers (31–45).
- The canopy is a line plus three. Row 2 is a full line, then add I1, N1 and G1 above it.
- Don’t forget the hook. I5 is a lone square at the bottom that’s easy to skip.
Tips for callers and hosts
The umbrella is a cheerful spring pick: April showers, Mother’s Day brunches, and especially bridal and baby showers, where the “shower” pun writes itself. Our baby shower bingo cards pair well with it for home parties. At 11 numbers it’s a medium game for a mid-session prize.
Because the hook makes the shape lopsided, show the board and say which way the hook curls. If you’d rather avoid disputes, call it a crazy umbrella and accept any direction.
Variations
- Crazy umbrella: opening toward any edge.
- No hook: canopy and straight handle only, 11 squares and 10 numbers.
- Letter T: a simpler canopy-and-handle shape. See the letter T.
