Quick answer
A single line bingo is five marked squares in a row: any of the 5 rows, 5 columns or 2 diagonals, for 12 possible winning lines on a 75-ball card. Lines through the center use the free space, so they need only 4 numbers. One card has about a 45% chance of a line by the 40th call, and in a hall with 500 cards someone usually wins by call 12.
What counts as a single line?
A single line is any five squares in a straight row on a 5×5 card. That gives you 12 ways to win:
- 5 horizontal rows (top row through bottom row)
- 5 vertical columns (the B, I, N, G and O columns)
- 2 diagonals (corner to corner, through the free space)
It is the default bingo game in most US halls. When a caller says “regular bingo” or “straight line,” this is what they mean unless they announce otherwise.
How many numbers do you need?
Lines that pass through the center (the middle row, the N column and both diagonals) only need 4 numbers because the free space is already marked. The other eight lines need all 5 numbers. That’s why center lines tend to show up more often than lines along the edges.
Single line odds by call
We calculated these exactly for one 75-ball card, counting all 12 lines and the free space:
| Calls made | Chance one card has a line |
|---|---|
| 30 | 14% |
| 40 | 45% |
| 50 | 81% |
| 60 | 99% |
Half of single cards have a line by call 42. In a room, the first line comes much faster. Our simulation puts the typical first winner at around call 19 with 50 cards in play and call 12 with 500 cards. Try other card counts with the bingo odds calculator.
Tips for players
- Scan the center first. Four of the 12 lines run through the free space, so the N column, the middle row and the diagonals are where most early bingos come from.
- Call out as soon as you have it. In most halls the first valid bingo wins, and a late call after the next ball can cost you the game or a share of it.
- Play the number of cards you can track. A line game moves fast. Missing a number on card three helps nobody. Our guide on how many bingo cards to play covers this.
Tips for callers and hosts
Single line is the natural opener. It’s quick, easy to explain and gets a winner in front of the room early, which keeps new players engaged. Because it ends fast, keep the prize modest compared to bigger patterns. Many hosts run several single-line games early, then move to two lines, shapes and finally a blackout.
If you want a slightly longer line game, try hardway bingo, which bans lines that use the free space.
Common variations
- Horizontal only or vertical only: just 5 lines count.
- Any diagonal: only the two corner-to-corner lines.
- Four corners counts as a line: some halls add the corners as a 13th way to win. Ask before the game.
- Double bingo / two lines: the game continues until a card has two separate lines.
Frequently asked questions
Do diagonals count in single line bingo?
Yes, in standard US hall play a single line can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal, which gives 12 possible lines. Some games restrict it, such as 'horizontal only' or 'any diagonal', and the caller will announce that before the first ball.
Does the free space count toward a line?
Yes. The free space in the middle of the N column counts as marked, so the middle row, the N column and both diagonals each need only 4 called numbers.
How many calls does it take to get a single line?
A single card reaches its first line by call 42 about half the time. With hundreds of cards in a hall, the first line usually comes much sooner, often in the low teens.
What is the easiest bingo pattern?
A single line is the most common easy pattern because there are 12 ways to make it. Postage stamp and four corners need fewer numbers, but they have fewer ways to win, so on one card a line usually comes first.
