Layer Cake Bingo Pattern: Rules, Odds & Tips

Quick answer

Layer cake bingo is won by covering three full rows: the top row, the middle row and the bottom row, with rows 2 and 4 left empty like the filling between cake layers. That's 15 squares, but the free space is in the middle row, so you need 14 numbers. One card has about a 3% chance by call 60, and with 500 cards in play the first layer cake typically lands near call 50.

Which squares make a layer cake?

Picture a cake cut from the side: three solid layers with filling in between. On your card:

  • Row 1 (top): B1, I1, N1, G1, O1
  • Row 3 (middle): B3, I3, free space, G3, O3
  • Row 5 (bottom): B5, I5, N5, G5, O5

Rows 2 and 4 don’t matter. You need three numbers from every column except N, where you need two (N1 and N5), for 14 numbers total.

Layer cake odds by call

Exact single-card figures:

Calls made Chance one card has a layer cake
40 under 0.01%
50 0.17%
60 3.1%
70 34%

Half of single cards finish by call 72. A room speeds that up a lot: our simulation puts the first layer cake near call 58 with 50 cards and call 50 with 500 cards.

If your hall also counts columns B, N and O as a “crazy” layer cake, the single-card chance at call 60 rises to 5.7% and the first winner in a 500-card room comes around call 48.

Tips for players

  • Think of it as three hardway-length lines. The top and bottom rows need 5 numbers each, and the middle row needs 4.
  • Rows 2 and 4 are dead. Numbers that land there don’t help, however close they look to a line.
  • Know whether it’s a progressive game. Some halls play it as “one line, two lines, layer cake,” with a prize at each stage. Don’t stop daubing after the first prize.

Tips for callers and hosts

Layer cake is a late-session pattern. At 14 numbers it’s one of the longer regular games, so it can carry a bigger prize than your lines and small shapes. It’s also easy to describe, and its fun name tends to stick.

A nice structure is to play it as a three-stage game: a single line wins a small prize, two lines a medium one, and the full layer cake the top prize, all on one card. Make clear that only rows 1, 3 and 5 count toward the cake.

Variations

  • Crazy layer cake: rows 1, 3 and 5 or columns B, N and O.
  • Two layers: two of the three rows, a version of two lines.
  • Ladder: two side rails with rungs between. See the ladder pattern.

Frequently asked questions

What rows are in a layer cake bingo?

Rows 1, 3 and 5: the top, middle and bottom rows. Rows 2 and 4 stay empty.

How many numbers do you need for layer cake?

Fourteen. The pattern covers 15 squares, but the middle row includes the free space.

Can layer cake be played with columns?

Some halls allow a 'crazy' layer cake where the B, N and O columns also count. That gives two ways to win and shortens the game by a few calls.
